Implant

Implantology is one of the dental specialities dealing with the supstitution of the lost tooth with the dental implant (usually in the form of screw) placed within the bone of the upper or lower jaw.

Implants are usually made of titanium, a biocompatible material that is non-toxic and non-alergic, therefore, not rejected by the body. Implants are inserted during a small surgical procedure under sterile conditions. After the insertion the implant intergrates with bone (osteointergration) during the period of 3 to 16 weeks, depending of the type and condition of the surrounding bone.

Indications for implants:

single tooth replacement, with healthy adjacent teeth that would have to be grinded to support the clasical fixed partial denture (bridge)

multiple-tooth replacement, that can't be supported by a classical bridge because of the big interdental span

completely edentulous jaw, when the few implants support complete fixed bridge (12 crows supported by 6 to 8 implants)

completely edentulous jaw, when the few implants support removable denture (2 to 4 implants)

This way implants replace missing teeth, but it is not always possible to use them. In the cases when the quantity and quality of the bone is low, it is not possible to insert the implant without previous transplantation of the patient's bone (usually from the lower jaw) or using the artificial bone particles.
